Lisa Mathews is a self-taught African American Artist.
She grew up in Dayton, Ohio. As a young child, Lisa spent countless hours with a pencil and drawing pad in hand. In addition to her love of visual arts, she also studied dance and performed with a dance company until she began college to continue her art studies at the University Of Cincinnati. After college, over the next 20 years, Lisa would become a young wife and within a few years later, a single mother of two daughters. She worked various corporate jobs to make ends meet while she raised her daughters and put them both through college.
At the age of 45, with no advance planning, she threw caution to the wind and stepped out in faith to pursue a career as a artist. During her pursuit, she happened upon an instructional book, "How To Make Clay Characters" by Maureen Carlson. It was through reading this book that she discovered what would become her passion as an artist. Lisa's chosen discipline is sculpture and her medium is polymer clay.
